Highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats. Completely reworked Mac and Web interfaces and improvements in the other interfaces make VLC easier than iTunes is a free application for Mac and PC. It plays all your digital music and video. Last updated: September 3, 2018. Developer: VLC. License: Freeware. File size: 45.9 MB. Downloads: 43,087. User rating: 4.5 53 votes. If you ask around about which is the best multimedia player that you can download for free, many people will probably give you the same answer: VLC Media Player. And that shouldn't surprise you as it's capable of playing the majority of multimedia formats available, including the most exotic ones, as well as DVDs, audio CDS, VCDs, streaming protocols. Furthermore, this player comes along with versions for different platforms and operating systems apart from Mac, as is the case of iPhone, Android or Windows PC and is considered as the most stable and versatile tool of them all. This fact has placed it ahead of other players because it's also capable of playing damaged files, amongst other things. And it's not only versatile due to its capacity to play videos but also because, although its latest version runs on macOS 10.6 and above, it also offers us other editions that can be used on previous versions such as Leopard, Tiger, Panther, Jaguar, Puma or Cheetah. Main features of VLC for macOS Its functions are the broadest we can find in software of this kind: • Wide compatibility with dozens of different audio and video formats. • Comes along with its own codecs so we don't need to download updates. • Support for different subtitle formats. • Recognition of several audio channels on videos. • Capable of playing incomplete or damaged files. • Built in streaming server and client to be able to broadcast or play video offline. • Apply filters to videos to generate different effects and distort the image. • Support for skins and extensions. What formats is VLC capable of playing? This is one of the most important aspects when it comes to choosing a player, especially if we need to play a rather unusual file format, mainly because the majority of media players can only cope with the same old AVI and MP4 formats: • Video formats: MPEG-1/2, DivX, MPEG-4 ASP, DivX, XviD, 3ivX D4, H.261, H.263 / H.263i, H.264 / MPEG-4, AVC, Cinepak, Theora, Dirac / VC-2, MJPEG (A/B), WMV, VC-1 1, QuickTime, Digital Video, On2, Indeo Video v3, and Real Video. ![]() • Audio formats: MPEG, MP3, AAC, Vorbis, AC3, E-AC-3, MLP, DTS, WMA, FLAC, ALAC, Speex, MPC, ATRAC 3, Wavpack, Mod, TrueAudio, APE, Real Audio, A-Law, AMR, MIDI, LPCM, ADPCM, QCELP, DV Audio, QuickTime, and MACE. • Image and sound broadcast formats: UDP/RTP Unicast and Multicast, HTTP, FTP, MMS, TCP/RTP Unicast, DCCP/RTP Unicast, DVD Video, VCD, SVCD, Audio CD, DVB y MPEG. ![]() Which can broadcast in the following formats: MPEG, AVI, ASF, WMV, WMA, MP4, MOV, 3GP, OGG, OGM, Annodex, Matroska (MKV), Real, WAV, Raw Audio, RAW Digital Video, FLAC, FLV (Flash), MXF, Nut, Standard MIDI, and Creative Voice. • Subtitle formats: DVD, text files, Vobsub, USF, SVCD, DVB, OGM, CMML, and Kate. • Tag formats: ID3, APEv2, and Vorbis comment. Customize it your own liking One of the main advantages of VLC is how sober its design looks. However, you might be into bright colors and high-pitched designs, so you might want to make the most of its function to apply skins. You can find all sorts since it's a successful open-source development and, as usual, it has a huge user community willing to collaborate in its evolution. Many users also share their own extensions to improve or add functions that by default are missing in this player.

Hello, i had adobe flash on my computer and a friend 'cleaned' my computer and it is no longer there. I tried installing adobe 10 but my mac is 10.3.9 - so I had to inunstall it, which worked and then downloaded adobe flash 9 - it downloaded but when I click on it on my desktop a box pops up that says there is no default application to open the document 'install_flash_player.exe.' I can click on 'choose applications', but I have no idea what I am looking for. Can someone please tell me what to do, as if you were speaking to a 5 year old? I am so not computer savvy! I have no idea why I can't install it as I did before. Thanks so much linda. I have been reading over all of your situations. I am also running Mac OS X 10.3.9. To install Adobe Flash Player 9, I find it best to download the.dmg file (select Flash Player 9 from the drop down list). Once file is downloaded open the.dmg file. It should open as a removable disk image. Double click on your hard drive (Macintosh HD, or what ever else you may have named it) and click on Library > Internet Plug-Ins. You may find Flash Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpt already in there. Click and drag those to the trash, and click and drag the two files from the.dmg into the Internet Plug-Ins folder. Make sure they stay just in the Plug-Ins folder and not a sub folder. Next, simply run the Adobe Flash Uninstaller file, then click 'Uninstall' to remove Flash from your system. If you have Chrome installed, be aware that it uses a secondary version of Flash that the uninstaller can't access, which you'll have to remove manually. To get Flash off of your Mac for good, you’ll need an uninstaller from Adobe. There are distinct versions for OS X 10.6 and later, for 10.4 and Once it’s finished, Adobe recommends you delete a couple of folders from your Library too. To open your home directory’s Library folder, go to the Finder. If that doesn't work open your hard drive again. This time click on Users. Select what user you are, A house icon will appear next to the name rather than a folder icon. Select Libray. Then select Internet Plug-Ins. ![]() ![]() Click and drag the two files from the.dmg file and place them in the Plug-Ins folder. If you are still having problems please email me at [email protected] Hope this helps. Thank you so much for your solution! After MONTHS of trying to puzzle this out, your directions were an answer to prayer! Just in case anyone is like me and needs a hand-holding explanation, let me say. Click the 'Select Version to Download' menu and select 9 for Mac OS X 10.1 - 10.3 3. Click Agree and Install now 4. Select SAVE TO DISC 5. Quit any browsers you have open. Double click on the 'install flash player 9.dmg' file that has shown up on your desktop. You'll see something running on your computer, and then a window will open that says Flash Player. I had been here before, and this is the part where I NEVER understood what to do! In the window you'll see four boxes and two arrows. What did the arrows mean????? I'd double click on the box that said Flash Player plug in, but then would get messages that my computer didn't know what program to use to open the file. HERE'S the ANSWER!!! The arrows mean to click on the box at the left and then to literally DRAG and DROP the material INTO THE PLUG-INS FOLDER in the box at the right. Do this for the two files. Seriously, that's all you have to do! Close the window. AbiWord is a Free Word Processor for Windows, Linux, and Mac Brian Burgess October 21, 2009, 12:00am EDT Sometimes you need a word processing application but not an entire office suite. GnomeOffice (Linux, Windows): This was a Linux suite in the beginning, catering to those users with a word processor and a spreadsheet program. It has since expanded to the Windows arena, allowing you to take your documents anywhere with the Open Document format. Advertisement Even after all these years, no one has yet dethroned Microsoft Word from its kingly position. Sure, a few alternatives have been playing a great game of catch-up and innovation, but there’s no doubt about it — Word is still the best. But unless you use some kind of emulation or virtualization software, there’s no way to run Word on a regular Linux setup. Which leaves us with a tough question: what’s the best word processor to use on Linux? There are a handful of worthy options out there. Let’s take a brief but thorough look at them to see all of their pros and cons. By the end, it’ll be up to you to pick the one that works best for your needs. Note: We’ll only be exploring native desktop programs, which means no For the majority of my life, Microsoft Word was the word processing tool to use if you were going to do any serious work. Sure, there were alternatives like Corel WordPerfect and later on OpenOffice. ![]() Those are still valid options though, so you should look into them too if you can. LibreOffice has truly come a long way since it debuted in 2011. A lot of people wonder what the difference is between LibreOffice and OpenOffice — Sometimes, the end-user benefits greatly from forks. Sometimes, the fork is done under a shroud of anger, hatred and animosity. Let's look at some examples., in case you didn’t know — and the simple answer is not much. Feel free to use either. We just prefer LibreOffice because it has a more enthusiastic team of developers and it seems like the LibreOffice community is more active. LibreOffice is the most notable software on this list for one reason: it’s the only desktop office suite that can really contend with Microsoft Office these days. In fact, even though Microsoft is still the clear king, LibreOffice is the king of free office suites. It's unlikely to replace Microsoft Office in a business environment, but it's an excellent alternative for casual users. Here's what's new in LibreOffice 5.1. New document wizards and templates make the learning curve easy. The interface is straightforward and intuitive yet customizable for advanced users. LibreOffice can open and save to Microsoft file formats, including DOC and DOCX. There are advanced features too, like “master documents” that group multiple documents together, built-in drawing tools, tracking changes and revisions made to documents, the ability to import and edit PDFs, and more. WPS Office is the set of office applications formerly known as Kingsoft Office, which you may recognize as one of the It is possible to get real work done on Android, but you've got a lot of options now when it comes to office suites. Let's examine the best of them. The desktop version is notable because it emulates the look and feel of Microsoft Office. WPS Office is named as such because it contains three applications: Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheets. All of their developmental efforts are focused on these three only, so rest assured that they aren’t wasting time on other, less important applications. Note that is a separate community-maintained build that’s free to use on a personal basis. The last time we looked at WPS Writer, — and it has only gotten sharper and better since then. If you prefer the Microsoft’s Ribbon interface, then you’ll like WPS Writer. Once you learn how to use it properly, everything is just significantly easier. And when you combine it with WPS’s ability to open multiple documents with tabs, you’ll fall in love. WPS can do what most word processors do, including format paragraphs, autosave and back up files, create templates, and more. Adobe Flash Player for Mac lets you access Flash content in Web sites when using browsers like OS X's Safari. The plug-in integrates seamlessly and through a preference pane, gives you control over the type of access each Web site has to your system. The only downside to using it is that it suffers from performance issues. Siri on Mac uses the same technologies and the same logic, but can do a little more. For instance, you can export the files she found and ask her to dig into your Mail or documents. You can actually ask Siri about that. She’ll give you a list of example commands you can use for various occasions. Pros Configurable: The plug-in adds a new preference pane in System Preferences where you will be able to adjust your local storage, camera, mic and peer-assisted networking settings to either allow the feature for all Web sites, on a per-request basis, or to deny all requests. Per-site settings: All the features listed above support per-site settings for even more precise control. Advanced options: The app lets you delete all Flash-related data and settings as well as audio and video license files, deauthorize the computer, and access trusted locations for developer testing. ![]() ![]() Cons Performance issues: Despite its long history with OS X, this software tends to slow down your computer and drain your battery. Bottom Line If you're constantly visiting Flash-based Web sites, you will have to install either this plug-in, or a browser like Google Chrome, which has built-in Flash support. Generally, the better way to go would be to use Chrome since there will be a lower performance impact on your system. But if Chrome is not your kind of browser, then this plug-in remains a viable solution for enjoying Flash content on your Mac. My Microsoft word for microsoft office has a backgroung colour problem. Everytime I open a document into it, the colour turns blue; which is not very to read from and definetely not the original background colour. I tried to change it from the format menu and select backgound but it keeps doing that all the time. Could you please tell me how can I restore the original colours. Believe it or not, I think you’ve actually found a feature of Microsoft Word, not some sort of bug in your documents or computer. For legibility sake, Word allows you to specify white text on a blue background in addition to the more common black text against a white background. Obviously, you don’t want to leave it setup that way, so let me show you how to change it in Microsoft Word for the Mac – it’s basically the same for the Windows version of Word too. May 18, 2018 - Microsoft Word documents display differently on different systems because of. PDF creation acts like a printer — but a printer that's the same everywhere. December 30, 2008 at 4:11 pm. It also decided to screw up some of the Outlook fonts too, but not as bad as it screwed Word, which is odd. Start up Microsoft Word and go to Preferences (on the PC it’s “Options”), then click on the General option. The choices look like this: The third option down, “blue background, white text”, is what you have accidentally checked. Simply uncheck it, click Okay and your document — and future documents you open in Microsoft Word — should be back to normal. Notice a few more options here too: “Show Project Gallery at startup” is one that many Word users are delighted to turn off once they’ve gotten the hang of using the program, and “WYSIWYG font and styles menus” can make it quite a bit easier to work with complex styles in particular, but it’s also cool for fonts too. Hope that gets you back with Word. Is your computer acting weird? Are boxes popping up on your screen telling you that your computer is infected? Are you hearing strange sounds? ![]() ![]() Your computer may have been infected with malware. It's not always easy to determine whether or not your computer has been infected with a virus, worm, Trojan or spyware, because authors of malicious software do their best to disguise their work. But there are some symptoms that could help you figure it out. Here are six signs that indicate your computer may be infected, according to Tim Armstrong, malware researcher at Moscow's Kaspersky Lab. Click on 'next' in the upper right of this page to continue. Unexpected pop-up windows, such as fake virus warnings telling you that you have security threats on your computer. 'One of the things we always tell people is that as of right now, there's no way a website can tell you if your computer is infected,' Armstrong said. 'Sometimes Skype will pop up a message saying, 'urgent security vulnerability.' But Skype can't tell if your computer is infected.' Unexpected sounds play randomly. Occasionally, the computer will respond with an audio signal to things that you have no control over. 'They'll be things like warning beeps,' Armstrong said. 'When an error message pops up a lot of times, it will come along with a warning message and certain pieces of malware will stifle that window so you can't see it. But you might still hear the warning message — a sound in the background that you didn't initiate.' Files or folders are deleted or changed for no reason. Your files might be missing, or the icons and/or content of your files could be different. Your computer slows down. 'One of the popular scams right now is something called 'pay per install,' Armstrong said. 'There are third-party companies out there in places like Russia and China that will allow you [bad guys] to go to their forums and sign up to receive a piece of software and they will pay you for every thousand users you can fool into installing the software. 'So these people who try to trick you into installing rogue software will put as many things on your computer as possible at the same time to make the most money. And with all this spyware and applications running at the same time, you'll see a slowdown in performance.'
